Los Angeles, CA: ONErpm recording artists Grupo Niche (founded by Jairo Varela and now in the hands of musical director José Aguirre,) won their first American Grammy Award for the album 40, in the “Best Tropical Latin Album” category at the 63rd Grammy Awards on March 14th.
The album is the salsa orchestra’s 29th record and commemorates Niche’s four decades as a popular musical group. 40 won the Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album last November and is the third album to be released after the death of the group’s founder.
This is the first album from Grupo Niche that does not feature the lyrics of maestro Jairo Varela, but came from the creation of maestro José Aguirre, the musical director of the group and one of the most judicious students of Varela and his style. During his creative process, Aguirre worked hard on the composition and spirit of the album to maintain the original essence of Grupo Niche and their four decades of musical history.
The album was recorded over a two year period in San Juan, Miami, Los Angeles and Cali, Columbia with percussion and harmony recorded in Puerto Rico, the metals recorded in Miami and vocals recorded in Cali, Columbia. 40 features nine tracks with different themes that were all recorded on tape to achieve a more analog and natural sound.
Guest artists on 40 include Hugo Candelario González and violinist Alfredo de la Fe who along with others bring new sonorities to compliment Grupo Niche’s music, making the album stand out for its inclusivity and expansion on the legendary group’s sound.
